Founded in 1989, Sogecable is the leading pay TV in Spain, the third in Europe and the pioneer in introducing the digital television, High Definition and the interactive services in the Spanish communications' market.
Its platform of Digital+ television channels is the most important one of the Spanish market having achieved more than 1,784 subscribers by the end of the second quarter of 2010. In addition, since November 2005, Sogecable has been the owner of an open television channel, Cuatro, which has reached 8.2% of the viewers' share in its fourth year of broadcast and has become one of the second generation channels with the greatest success in Europe.
The year 2009 has been exceptional for Sogecable. With earnings that exceeded 1,525 million Euros, the company has obtained the highest profits since its beginnings: more than 90 million Euros (75 million Euros in 2008 and 62.1 million Euros in 2007).
Sogecable, which belongs to the Prisa Group, possesses a great experience in all of the audiovisual industry's value chain, from the production of all types of contents, the acquisition and management of audiovisual rights, the edition and distribution of channels, the marketing and management of subscribers, as well as the management of all of the company's advertising in its different supports by means of Sogecable Media.
Precisely in 2009, its pay TV platform, Digital+, achieved exploitation earnings of 1,251 million Euros and an EBITDA that exceeded 307 million Euros.
Digital+'s offer, always in the vanguard of contents and technology, has thus undergone a relevant enrichment, throughout 2009, offering its subscribers High Definition and now also the 3D. Digital+'s entertainment offer, with a share o of more than 6.5 million viewers, includes more than 150 channels and programming services that are available by means of its decoders, among which we may find iPlus, a last generation device with the market's most advanced technology that allows you to capture the High Definition signal and may record more than 80 hours of programming.
Digital+ was the first platform to release High Definition broadcasts in Spain and today it possesses 14 High Definition channels, most of which belong to the Canal+ family or the most prestigious content producers of the world, such as Fox, MTV or National Geographic.
Launched in September 1990, Canal+, pay TV's Premium channel in Spain, crowned its 20 years of life as the indisputable leader of Digital+ and as the maximum reference for pay TV in Spain. In the last years, Canal plus considerably improved its sports and entertainment offer and now practically offers all of its family of channels in High Definition.
The company also produces a series of thematic channels that cover very diverse contents and which, in addition to being present in the Digital+ offer, are commercialised to other pay operators. That is the case with CNN+, DCine Español, Sportmanía, Viajar, 40TV, 40 Latino and Caza y Pesca.
Sogecable also owns Cuatro, the open TV channel that was released in November 2005. Its offer is based on quality entertainment and news, channel identity brands that, thanks to a responsible and innovative treatment in all of its formats, have turned Cuatro into a prestige brand in less than four years.
Sogecable is present in Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasts with three channels: Cuatro, CNN+, the non-stop news channel, and 40 Latino, the Latin music channel.
Likewise, Sogecable is present in the production and distribution of movies by means of two of its branches: Sogecine is the leading producer of the movies' market in Spain. Its catalogue consists of around about 100 titles signed by the great Spanish movie directors, such as Alejandro Amenábar, Julio Medem, Fernando León de Aranoa, Vicente Aranda, Álex de la Iglesia or Fernando Colomo, among others. Sogepaq is the company that is dedicated to the acquisition, management and marketing of the audiovisual rights for the movie theatres, videos, the international distribution and television. With its own catalogue of approximately 400 titles, Sogepaq distributes more than 270 Spanish titles abroad.
